Welcome to the Blog: Speech Therapy That Actually Listens

Hi there! I’m so glad you’re here.

I’m Kayla, the face behind this practice—and yes, the one juggling sticky notes, snack requests, and session plans all before lunch. I started my private speech therapy practice back in 2021 with one big goal in mind: to create a space where therapy meets real life, real needs, and real families.

If you’ve ever sat across from a provider and thought, “This just isn’t working for my kid,” you’re not alone—and friend, you’re in the right place.

Why I Started This Practice (Spoiler: It Was Personal)

Before opening my doors, I worked in more traditional therapy settings, where productivity goals and insurance requirements dictated everything. And while I’m all for a good checklist, I found myself more focused on the clock than the client. That didn’t sit right with me.

Then came the plot twist—navigating the therapy world as a special needs parent. After cycling through therapists for our youngest daughter, I felt the sting of mismatched care, the exhaustion of starting over, and the frustration of being unheard. We “fired” more than a few providers. I was a mom on a mission.

Through that journey, I gained something I couldn’t have learned in grad school: the deeply personal understanding that parents need support, and kids need therapy that sees all of them—not just their goals on paper.

A Few Fun Facts (Because I’m More Than Just a Therapist)

When I’m not in therapy sessions, you can probably find me:

  • Freezing in a hockey rink, cheering on my kid (yes, I’m a proud hockey mom and lifelong hockey fan—bring on the Zamboni!)

  • Covered in dirt with a spade in hand—I’m obsessed with gardening, greenhouses, and anything that grows

  • Out in nature, which is my therapy

  • Or sipping coffee and geeking out over strength-based, neuroaffirming approaches (because yes, that’s my kind of fun too)

Also worth mentioning? I have a complex medical history of my own. It’s given me a unique perspective as both a patient and provider—helping me connect more deeply with families navigating their own medical and therapeutic journeys. It’s taught me compassion, patience, and how powerful it is to truly listen to someone’s story.

What You’ll Find on This Blog

This blog is my way of pulling back the curtain on therapy—making it feel less clinical and more personal. You’ll find:

  • Strength-based, neuroaffirming therapy insights that honor every child’s whole self

  • Real-life parenting stories, because sometimes we just need to hear, “Same here.”

  • Tips and resources for advocating, navigating systems, and finding your voice as a parent

  • A healthy dose of humor, honesty, and heart

Whether you're a parent, fellow therapist, or someone deep in the “Google-at-2am” phase of figuring it all out, my hope is that you leave here feeling seen, supported, and maybe even a little more hopeful.
