Backing the Blue: First Responder Sensory Kits
The Backing the Blue: First Responder Sensory Kits are more than just a set of tools—they’re a commitment to compassion, inclusion, and preparedness. Designed by Kayla Obenour, each kit contains thoughtfully selected items to help calm, comfort, and support communication for individuals with sensory processing differences or other disabilities during high-stress situations.
These kits are intentionally paired with a required training component—because the power of the tools lies in how they're used. The training equips first responders to recognize behaviors that may indicate sensory or neurodiverse needs, and to understand when and how to use each item in the kit effectively. It also includes practical education about autism and similar diagnoses, along with strategies for delivering services in a way that ensures dignity, safety, and trust.

While the kits are rooted in law enforcement needs, their reach extends far beyond. Fire departments, schools, physician’s offices, libraries, and other public-facing organizations can also benefit from having these sensory supports on hand—backed by the same essential training.
Together, the kit and training create a powerful pathway to inclusive service, helping teams respond with calm, confidence, and compassion. When first responders are equipped and empowered, communities thrive.

Let’s build safer, more understanding spaces—one informed interaction at a time.

Equipped for Inclusion
Each sensory kit includes carefully selected tools—such as noise-reducing headphones, visual communication aids, fidget items, weighted lap pads and sunglasses—designed to support sensory regulation and communication. Kit contents may vary based on the unique needs of each setting and are always paired with specialized training to help professionals respond with empathy, reduce stress, and foster inclusive, person-centered interactions.
Building Community Connections
We’re proud to partner with local law enforcement agencies—like the Perkins Township Police Department—to equip officers with sensory kits designed to support individuals with disabilities during community interactions.
Now in use across 30+ departments in five Ohio counties, these kits help bridge communication gaps and promote safer, more inclusive responses.
Each kit is paired with training to help first responders recognize sensory needs and respond with empathy and understanding.

Testimonial
"Thank you to Kayla Obenour, a local Speech Language Pathologist... Kayla has started a program, Backing the Blue, that provides First Responder Sensory Kits to emergency responders. The kits are portable bags containing numerous sensory tools and toys that can assist our patrol deputies in providing a more positive experience when they are interacting with a person who has Autism and who may be experiencing a crisis. Along with other local law enforcement agencies, we were very fortunate yesterday to receive a number of these kits donated by Kayla to be carried by our personnel. Thanks Kayla! "

Expanding Access to Inclusive Tools & Training
While this initiative began with law enforcement, our vision extends far beyond. Sensory kits and training can benefit a wide range of community organizations—including schools, libraries, medical offices, transportation services, and more. These tools can also be valuable for individuals and families seeking support in navigating sensory or communication challenges in daily life.
Our goal is to create environments where all people feel understood, supported, and safe.
If your organization—or someone you support—could benefit from a customized sensory kit and training, we would love to connect.
